Individual Project
The Geomatics & Cartography Research Center draws together twenty-five of the world’s leading figures in Geographic Information Systems. They were pioneers in the development and application of Cybercartography. The center was interested in developing viable innovative multi-sensory product platforms for users to interact with geographic information. After an intensive insight-gathering program of research, observations and expert interviews, an opportunity was found to integrate the constructs of cybercartography with marine conservation and education. Virtual Aquarium is a virtual reality snorkeling system that transforms any pool into an immersive underwater marine environment. Constructed of off-the shelf components currently available on the market, the system guides users acoustically and visually through any bluetooth uploaded 3D world. The limits of topics, level of detail and immersiveness of the environments is only limited by the software developers’ vision.
Project Aware’s belief that education leads to preservation was a driving force in the project direction.
